SCITWIKI - a year in the wiki wilderness
Matthew Green (email: M.A. Green@wlv.ac.uk for a wiki account) from SCIT presented his findings from the SCIT wiki project at the E-Learning Celebration in June last year. His initial motivation for the project was to find a solution for administration problems and enhance the current paper module workbook, however, the reseach developed into whether students would help each other learn and whether unmotivated students would engage.
The wiki was set up for the modules CP1082 Fundamentals of Web and CP1079 PHP. The powerpoint slides can be found here
From the Wiki's 'Revision History' patterns and results of students' use can be monitored and quantatative results acquired.
Statistics
- 11500 hits
- 15 error corrections in 2 weeks
- 400 seperate contributions
- 10 new pages (12% of subject wiki) by students in 1 academic year
Matthew concluded that students do want to help each other learn, preferring to learn through their preferred communication channels, not ours. Student feedback was positive regarding the Wiki.
